Captain Tim Stockings
Tim Stockings read engineering at Imperial College London before joining the Royal Navy to fly helicopters. He served in a wide variety of ships on operations around the globe, including HM Royal Yacht BRITANNIA. He commanded three ships - a fisheries protection vessel, the Type 23 Frigate HMS MONMOUTH and HMS ARK ROYAL. During a varied 25-year career he was a senior lecturer on an international Master’s course, worked as a senior officer advising UK ministers in Whitehall, led the international team training the Iraqi Navy in Umm Qasr and travelled widely in support of UK diplomacy. His service took him to most areas of the world, hot and cold, operating on the land, at sea and in the air.
Since leaving the Navy, Tim has worked in the NHS delivering 999 operations for the ambulance service, including operating air ambulances, out of hours GP practices, counter terrorist response and London 2012. He was the Risk Director for Saga shipping, where he helped deliver transformational change in the shipping business, including public flotation. Tim was the Operations Director for the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). His responsibilities included strategy and operational delivery, managing two ships, five aircraft, six polar research stations, engineering, logistics, infrastructure and support services in the most inhospitable environment on earth. He also led projects to move an ice station 23 kilometres over a disintegrating ice shelf and the polar research ship RRS Sir David Attenborough (aka Boaty McBoatface), which included live global media appearances.
Tim writes and presents internationally on leadership, particularly in difficult times, working with UK Cabinet Office, the Department for Exiting the EU and Foreign & Commonwealth Office. He has presented in Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India. He has a Master’s degree in Leadership & Management, a Diploma in Strategic Leadership and is qualified as a Chartered Manager.
