A webinar by the IMarEST's South East England and London Home Counties Branch
Drawings to define a ship hull became popular only in the 17th century in England. Since then, drawings have been a key element in shipbuilding, however there are people who thinks that its use will vanish soon through the implementation of the digital revolution.
The way we work with shipbuilding CAD tools is changing thanks to the ubiquitous access to the information and the different hardware available to explode that information: Augmented, Virtual or Mixed Reality. The way we interact with CAD tools is also changing, with technologies like Natural Language Processes that allows to have a direct conversation with the applications via Artificial Intelligence. The concepts that are clear is the use of Data Centric model and the concept of Digital Twin, a real and effective synchronization between what we design, what we construct, by covering the complete life cycle of the product thanks to technologies like Internet of Things (IoT).
To remain competitive, we must study how these technologies can improve the benefits by upgrading processes, resources, workflow, and cooperation between stakeholders. Digitalization is on hand and it is mature enough to start implementation and be part of our strategy for the future in shipbuilding.
