Captain Philip “Paddy” Parvin joined the Royal Navy in 1984 and was selected for the UK Submarine Service as a nuclear engineer. With the sea forming part of his life from an early age on the coast of Northern Ireland, he went on to gain a First Class Honours degree in Engineering and a postgraduate diploma in Nuclear Reactor Technology before deploying to sea.

His naval career included service in Trafalgar-class submarines, frigates, and with the Royal Marines, as well as shore appointments in acquisition, operations, and nuclear regulation. His final uniformed role, completed in May 2022, was Chief Engineer and Safety Director of the UK submarine force, including the delivery of critical outputs throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Fellow of IMarEST, he is strongly committed to continuing professional development and also holds an MSc in Marine Engineering, an award-winning MBA, and a degree in French. Since leaving the Navy, he has supported product safety, nuclear safety, and regulatory development, including work with Australia’s emerging regulatory regime. He chairs the IMarEST Council Executive Committee and is active in sustainability, sailing, diving, and shark conservation. He is married with two grown up children and lives on the southern coast of England.
