The IMarEST prize, awarded by the Victoria Branch for the best engineering final year maritime industry related prize for 2018 was awarded on 18th October to Martin Lee, Akshay Kumar, Shivang Khandelwal and Vishwesh Sridhar (refer photograph). Their project extended work undertaken in previous years of research by other students to bring this developing product much closer to a commercial reality. The developing 3D underwater surface scanner is intended to eventually be used to accurately reconstruct the surface of a ship's hull, thus enabling quantification of surface roughness and an extrapolation to projected fuel consumption. A key design criterion is portability and operation by a diver. IMarEST Victoria Branch committee members John Ritter, Howard Mumford, Stephen Marsh and Doug Stevens interviewed the teams of two projects before deciding upon this one as the winner of the local prize.
