The area covered by the Benelux branch has a coastline of more than 500km and contains an important river delta that connects the North Sea with the European hinterland. Besides many others it includes the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam which both rank among the busiest ports of Europe and of the world.
The close link of the Benelux with the sea is further reflected by a bustling shipbuilding industry supported by many maritime suppliers and other maritime organisations. The high shipping density in the waters around (and through) the Benelux necessitates an ambitious approach towards shipping safety as well as environmental issues, both under and above water.
