The accreditation process is an independent assessment of an academic programme against standard learning outcomes. Gaining accreditation means that your programme meets some or all of the knowledge, understanding and skills required for professional registration.
It is a stamp of excellence and generally involves a rigorous peer-review process, analysing the technical content taught and the processes in place to ensure effective delivery of the programme.
We accredit undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and Initial Professional Development schemes (IPD) in engineering, science and technology across the world. We also accredit programmes that meet some or all of the academic requirements for Chartered status (CEng/CMarEng, CSci/CMarSci, CMarTech) or Incorporated/Registered status (IEng/IMarEng, RMarSci, RMarTech).
Courses accredited internationally range across Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Offshore and Subsea Engineering, Maritime and Shipping Operations and Management, Oceanography, Marine Sciences, Geography and more.
The IMarEST also provides a CPD Recognition service for events and training courses related to marine engineering, science and technology. For more information specific to CPD accreditation please click here.
IMarEST accreditation shows that your programmes meet internationally recognised academic standards (such as for Chartered status). It enhances your reputation as a high-quality education provider that is also industrially relevant.
Accreditation will help to promote your programme internationally and to encourage more students to enrol. The consultation process involves independent, experienced and knowledgeable assessors with global academic expertise – this is a valuable tool for continuous improvement and advice on international best practice.
It demonstrates a commitment to professionalism and the development of your students. All students are given free membership to the IMarEST for the duration of their studies – introducing them to a wealth of learning resources for professional development. Students on accredited programmes are on the first step to achieving internationally-recognised professional qualifications (such as Chartered status).
Our expert, trained panel will work in partnership with you and, following a review of the programme materials and a panel visit, they will make a recommendation to the IMarEST’s Professional Affairs & Education Committee (PAEC) which is responsible for all accreditation decisions. Accreditation can be granted for a period up to five years.
1 You will submit a brief overview of the programme and we will advise on your likely eligibility for accreditation. We may need to conduct an advisory visit for institutions that are unfamiliar with the accreditation process.
2 You will then complete a full accreditation submission, including extensive information on course content, teaching, internal processes, quality assurance, etc. (The accreditation panel can review multiple programmes together).
3 An accreditation visit will be arranged to discuss the submission, review additional material, visit facilities and meet with staff and students. At the end of the visit our accreditation panel will advise of their recommendations.
4 A formal report will be prepared and sent to you for comment. This will then be sent to the PAEC to get formal approval of our panel’s recommendations. Your programme will be ‘IMarEST Accredited’.
Fees are dependent on the number of programmes accredited and you will be required to cover the expense of any panel visits. For a full academic accreditation initial fees start at £4,000 plus VAT, plus expenses. For more information and for a detailed quotation please contact the IMarEST at
The IMarEST also provides a CPD recognition service.
