Senior Executive Officer
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency
Contract type: Full-time
Salary: £42,105 – £50,719
Champion safer lives, safer ships and cleaner seas.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) saves countless lives every year. As the organisation entrusted with implementing the Government’s maritime safety policy, our work impacts on all UK-registered ships, and those passing through our waters. A key component of our work falls to the Directorate of Maritime Safety and Standards (DMSS) which inspects and surveys ships to ensure that they are meeting our meticulous standards – and it is here that you could make your mark in a career-defining role.
We are currently seeking a number of Marine Surveyors to join us in the following disciplines: Engineering, Nautical, Ship and Naval Architecture. Each of these disciplines share the communal goals of delivering ‘safer lives, safer ships and cleaner seas’, thereby minimising the risk to seafarers’ lives and reducing pollution within our waters and on the shores. Across all roles, you will be exposed to a wealth of fascinating survey and inspection challenges, ensuring that port installations and ships of all sizes – ranging from fishing vessels to cargo ships – are meeting international standards and legislation. Working in collaboration with colleagues and a wide range of partners, your work could include anything from flagging up areas of concern or issuing certificates, to responding to incidents involving ships in UK waters. Applicants for the Engineering and Nautical disciplines will also qualify as Examiners, after which you will verbally test Seafarers who are applying for Certification of their Competence.
Across all disciplines, we offer unique growth opportunities. We want you to excel in our team, so we will support your ambitions with ongoing professional development, plus plenty of support from a dynamic and friendly team. To excel in these roles, you will therefore have a passion for the work we do, possess a full driving license and have exceptional communication skills. Capable of working at pace and making decisions under pressure, you will be able to influence others and support our customers, whilst taking a robust approach to your responsibilities. The specific requirements of each discipline are as follows:
- Engineering: You will be a qualified Engineer Surveyor with a STCW III/2 Chief Engineer unlimited Certificate of Competency (your certificates will have been issued by a country whose seafarer training is recognised by the UK). You will also typically have at least three years of experience in a managerial role on board a ship, or in a technical capacity of responsibility within the maritime industry.
- Nautical: You will be a Nautical Surveyor with a STCW II/2 Master unlimited Certificate of Competency (your certificates will have been issued by a country whose seafarer training is recognised by the UK). You will also typically have at least three years of experience in a managerial role on board a ship, or in a technical capacity of responsibility within the maritime industry.
- Ship: You will be a Chartered Engineer, with either a degree accredited by IMarEST or IMechE, or an equivalent level of marine industry experience. You will also typically have at least three years of technical experience in the industry, with demonstrable knowledge of marine structural design, marine engineering, construction or repair.
- Naval Architecture: You will be a Chartered Engineer, with either a degree accredited by RINA or SNAME, or an equivalent level of marine industry experience. You will also typically have at least three years of technical experience in the industry, with demonstrable knowledge of marine structural design, construction or repair, and stability measurement or analysis.
This is a valuable opportunity to join us at an interesting point in our evolution. We are committed to reducing coastal deaths and the environmental impact of maritime activities in the UK, so we are constantly seeking out better ways of working. As such, we are embracing new technologies, and we are working with academia, industry and the government to open the doors of maritime innovation. Committed to offering increasingly high-quality services, the resulting atmosphere is uniquely progressive – making for an exciting working environment for our people. So play your part in our development, and develop your skills as you make a tangible impact on this generation and the next. Does your job matter? What we do does, come and join us!
