The re-birth of the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carriers, The Queen Elizabeth Class, and the timing and theme of the seventh Engine As A Weapon International Symposium – EAAW VII (Bristol, UK: Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 June 2017) has led to an exciting, and highly topical, programme for the event being published online at www.eaaw.org.uk.
Organised by FIGS Events Limited on behalf of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) the two-day event aims to explore the reality of fully integrated engineering systems and equipment, and discuss the merits and challenges of delivering combat power at sea. Babcock International Group and BMT Defence Services are its major sponsors.
“Our theme ‘Combat Power at Sea’ has led to a particularly well supported Call for Papers with high quality submissions that have allowed the technical committee to develop a very exciting programme for EAAW VII,” explains Commander Ian Hassall RN, Chair of the EAAW VII Technical Advisory Committee. “The programme comprises a varied and eclectic mix of technical papers from both the combat and platform system arenas.
“There are technical papers from the Netherlands, Singapore and USA as well as from the UK, and there is no doubt that the timing and theme fits appropriately with the build of the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carriers, and resonates with our international audience, for we have included a number of presentations on power systems launch and integrated energy systems.
“Energy efficiency and unmanned systems are also well represented in EAAW VII, making it an unmissable event for all eager to get the latest thinking and direction from academia, industry, the MOD and overseas navies, I am looking forward to two stimulating days in Bristol,” he adds

The Symposium in more detail
Cdr (ME) Dr Paul Schulten RNLN, Ministry of Defence, the Netherlands with ‘Energy As A Weapon, part II’ and Mark Dannatt, Capt Steven McCarthy, Ministry of Defence, UK with ‘Exploiting total ship integration in UK Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers – Opportunity knocks’ share the first morning session on 20 June.
A further nine papers will be presented during the day encompassing laser directed energy weapons; weapon system replacement and installation (Type 23 Sea Wolf to Sea Ceptor); de-risking the integration of laser DEW systems onto warships; and four presentations on launch systems whether for aircraft or UAVs. Plenty of time is allowed following each group of presentations for discussion.
Eleven technical presentations will take place on Day Two starting with four presentations looking at energy efficiency ranging from air-conditioning to efficient power system design, and from reducing the hotel load in warships to the applicability of electrical propulsion for future fleet replenishment vessels. Attention then turns to lead-acid cells, complex high integrity systems and variable speed power generation and energy storage.
The afternoon session turns to equally applicable topics including unmanned systems; improving the warfighting effectiveness of the operations room team; and testing the boundaries of virtual reality within ship support. Rear Admiral Nigel Guild CB FREng then brings EAAW VII to a close with his summary of the two days.
Networking plays a key role at all IMarEST learned society events, and EAAW VII is no exception. Attendees arriving early on Monday 19 June are invited to a Welcome BBQ at the Avon Gorge Hotel on the Event Terrace overlooking the Clifton Suspension Bridge (pre-booking of this event is required).
The Symposium Reception on Tuesday 20 June will take place on the Promenade Deck of ss Great Britain. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and built in 1843 at the Great Western Dockyard. This magnificent vessel was built to serve the growing transatlantic passenger trade between England and the United States. She was unique at the time in terms of both construction and size and was the first propeller driven, ocean going, iron wrought ship in the world. EAAW VII delegates are also invited to make use of the Brunel Institute during their time in Bristol. Situated alongside the ss Great Britain the Institute houses one of the world’s finest maritime collections.
