The IMarEST has introduced a five-year Graduate Pathway to support graduates starting out in their career after completing a degree, cadetship or apprenticeship. In addition to all the benefits of Associate Member level membership, the Institute has devised a package of training materials aimed at boosting key skills needed in the world of work and preparing them for IMarEST professional registration.
The first year focuses on employability skills and will provide access to IMarEST resources and help with CV preparation, interview skills, creating a professional development plan and identifying what type of professional registration to work towards.
Years two, three and four shift focus onto finessing professional skills such as technical report writing, financial/budget management, project management, presentation and communication skills, recording CPD and self-reflection and professional engagement.
The fifth and final year of the scheme concentrates on preparing for professional registration to make the process as smooth and straightforward as possible.
Furthermore, recognising that salaries in junior roles can start out at a modest level but have the potential to rise rapidly, the Institute has put in place a discounted fee structure available exclusively to those registering on the Graduate Pathway programme.
The Graduate Pathway is an evolution of the free Student membership that the IMarEST has provided for many years to those in full-time further education. This waiver acknowledges the fact that undergraduates, postgraduates, cadets, apprentices and other trainees are often living on a tight budget but recognises that supporting and encouraging the next generation of marine engineers, scientists and technologists is important for the profession to thrive in years and decades to come.
