At the last IMarEST Membership Committee meeting, George Ferrier, a tireless IMarEST volunteer and ambassador, was awarded an IMarEST President’s Commendation for his continuous and sustained work in support of the Institute. His services as a Professional Review Interview (PRI) assessor for members seeking registration are well deserving of recognition – in the past year, George has conducted 30 such interviews, requiring a great deal of his time in both preparation and execution . George is also a member of both the Membership Committee and its sub-committee, the Individual Case Procedure Board.
The Institute also recognises the work he has done to codify procedures for merchant seamen seeking registration, building on the Defined Routes for officers in the British, Australian and New Zealand navies, he has generated similar Defined Routes for deck officers, engineer officers and electro-technical officers in the Merchant Navy. This involved careful and detailed research of their qualifications and career paths and mapping these against the criteria for registration through the appropriate bodies. These routes have been accepted by the Professional Affairs and Education Committee and will greatly improve the support the Institute can offer to its members on their path to Chartered status.
George has also been instrumental in providing a very important mechanism to help project engineers who, through the fundamental nature of their work, are unable to meet certain competencies required for professional registration in this crucial branch of engineering. He has been one of the key members of a Project Engineering Working Group analysing the shortfall and working with MLA College to provide a research project module to bridge this gap. This will help candidates to meet requirements and will also give them recognition of their prior experiential learning in terms of credits towards a Master’s level degree, to be awarded following successful completion of this research project module.
The Institute is delighted to recognise such a worthy candidate for this award and would like to thank George for his unswerving commitment.
