Experts will gather in Singapore on 24 April for IMarEST's roundtable discussion, "Autonomous Shipping – putting the human back in the headlines"
The IMarEST has taken up the gauntlet in considering the skills and training needs of a future workforce in the journey towards increasing automation and the upscaling of cyber physical systems in the shipping industry, to ensure that automation is the tool, and not the goal.
To facilitate this, a roundtable discussion will be held to provide a platform for industry leaders and experts to share and discuss their experience and views. This will enable the identification of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats presented by smart shipping on a sector-by-sector basis, while also dealing with academic research issues. These will all be considered within a wider context of social issues and the perceived effects to the general public.
A survey has been sent to IMarEST's members to gain a sense of their general views . The results of the survey will form the basis of the debate at the roundtable and will be supplemented by the industry experts’ thoughts on overcoming the challenges associated with the technology and ways to implement it within their organisations. Results from the discussion will be distributed widely across the industry, via a report of the recommendations published on the IMarEST website and sent to interested stakeholders.
With an extensive list of attendees confirmed, the impact of the roundtable will be of significant value to decision-makers responsible for policy creation, as well as those responsible for policy implementation. These will then seek to create opportunities for wide routes to dissemination and exploitation of the results.
Representatives from BMT Defence, Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore, Republic of Singapore Navy, DNV GL, Braemar, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, Wartsila and many more will be in attendance.
The event has been made possible by Principal Sponsor - BMT Defence & Security UK Ltd, Venue Sponsor - Institute of High Performance Computing/A*Star, Additional Sponsor - Braemar Technical Services Ltd and Supporting Organisations - Institution of Mechanical Engineers and British Chamber of Commerce Singapore. The event is being held in conjunction with Singapore Maritime Week 2018 (SMW).
