Ocean University of China (OUC) has partnered with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), the world’s largest international marine professional body. OUC has particular strengths in oceanography and fisheries science, with campuses in Yushan, Fushan, Laoshan and Huangdao.
The IMarEST will continue to offer free student membership to all of OUC’s students, which includes use of the ‘SIMarEST’ post-nominals to help them demonstrate their commitment to their careers. The two organisations will work together to promote courses, workshops, conferences and seminars and help the next generation by encouraging the participation of student members in various activities.
The IMarEST has also accredited the university’s MEng Power Engineering and BEng Marine Engineering degrees. The accreditation - carried out by Prof Yoo Sang Choo CEng CMarEng FIMarEST, a past president of the Institute and Director (Research), Centre for Offshore Research & Engineering, at the National University of Singapore, Dr Ivan CK Tam CEng CMarEng FIMarEST, Director of Operations at NUIS Newcastle University and Tom Fanthorpe, IMarEST Registrar – helps to benchmark programmes against an internationally recognised standard.
David Kelly, IMarEST’s Director of Asia Pacific, said: “We are dedicated to be supporting the development of marine professionals in China and this renewed partnership is a milestone for us in our wider work of forging and strengthening ties with academic institutions across Asia for the benefit of students and teachers alike. The Institute’s global network of marine experts allows professionals to exchange ideas and knowledge and to develop in their careers. We look forward to partnering with more universities in the region to expand this network and the opportunities for learning even further.”
