For some, the oceans represent pristine environments that should be preserved and protected from commercial activities. For others, the oceans offer new potential for supplying minerals to developed and developing economies.
The objective of this UMI is to consider how to honour both perspectives through careful environmental stewardship and policy formulation for the development of marine mineral resources. Refereed papers will examine technical, legal, regulatory, and political approaches to addressing this objective, and consider other topics of timely interest for marine minerals.
The Underwater Mining Institute (UMI) is the premier global forum for cutting-edge analysis and discussion of marine minerals issues. It has provided this service to the world community since 1970.
UMI 2014 — “Harvesting Seabed Minerals in Harmony with Nature”, the 43rd UMI conference of the International Marine Minerals Society, will be held at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento, Parque das Nações, in Lisbon, Portugal in September 2014:
