Operational oceanography (OO) aims to provide sustained marine measurements, analyses, predictions and assessments for use in improving public safety and national security, supporting the shipping industry and protecting the marine environment.
This Special Interest Group has an overall objective to raise the profile and understanding of the concept of operational oceanography through participation in national and international initiatives.
A key role of the OOSIG is to promote engagement between users and suppliers of operational oceanographic products and services. We also encourage the exchange of knowledge between different sectors, e.g. offshore oil, gas and renewables.
The group also undertakes academic outreach and early career path development in operational oceanography to help ensure the next generation of oceanographers are fully “operational” when entering the workplace.
