Following the signing of a 35-year concession agreement in June 2017 between Abu Dhabi Ports and the Port of Fujairah—which granted Abu Dhabi Ports exclusive rights to develop port infrastructure and undertake operations for containers, general cargo, ro-ro, and cruise ships—the newly established Fujairah Terminals welcomed The Dubai Alliance, the first ship at the terminal and its first container feeder vessel. The vessel is part of the Star Feeders short-sea common carrier container feeder service operating between UAE ports.
Fujairah Terminals is owned and managed by Abu Dhabi Ports—the developer, operator and manager of commercial and community ports within the emirate of Abu Dhabi, Fujairah Port, and Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD)—having taken over management of the terminals from Fujairah Port Authority on August 1. The company will retain exclusive management of container business throughout the emirate of Fujairah. The exclusive agreement is intended to enhance port infrastructure (inclusive of investing in new and advanced technological equipment to increase operational efficiencies and services), enhancing the port’s ability to cater to larger vessels through the deepening of berths and building almost 300,000sq m yard of storage space as well as a 1km quay, bring about a marked increase in vessel calls, contribute to the UAE’s maritime and trade growth, and play a complementary role in maritime shipping activities at Khalifa and Zayed ports.
