Wärtsilä has unveiled plans to build a new research, product development and production centre in Vaasa, Finland.
As part of the project, the company will invest €83m in modern testing and production technology. Total investment in the ‘Smart Technology Hub’ will be roughly €200m – including its new office and factory buildings, logistics and infrastructure.
According to a statement from Wärtsilä, the new hub will enable more agile and efficient testing and development of solutions for the maritime and oil and gas industries.
Researchers and other sector operators will be invited to the centre to collaborate as part of Wärtsilä’s vision of a “partner campus”, in which research and development take place alongside customers and suppliers, as well as start-ups and universities.
"Amazing ideas do not just appear out of thin air," says Vesa Riihimäki, MD of Wärtsilä Finland Oy. "By bringing together experts from different walks of life – both from business and from the university world – we will build an inspiring environment for new creativity."
The Smart Technology Hub will open its doors in 2020.
