The world’s largest plug-in hybrid vessel – Color Hybrid – has been delivered to the cruise ferry operator Color Line by Norwegian yard Ulstein Verft .
Color Hybrid is equipped with five-megawatt batteries that can be charged from shore power.
The innovative design means the vessel can travel silently in and out of the Sandefjord Fjord without emitting any harmful gases, nitrogen or sulphur.
The entire battery pack weighs 65 tonnes and can be recharged in one hour.
The ship has a heat reservoir of five megawatts, which utilizes heat from both the wake and the exhaust for heating.
This, together with an optimal hull construction, helps to make the vessel energy efficient and environmentally friendly, according to Color Line.
Measuring 160m in length and 27m in the beam, Color Hybrid can carry 2,000 passengers and 500 cars.
Around 70 per cent of the suppliers to the project are from established Norwegian maritime clusters.
