Four leading Japanese technology corporations have announced plans to form a strategic partnership that will provide new marine infrastructure for electrically powered vessels.
The corporations involved are Asahi Tanker Co., Exeno Yamamizu Corporation, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd., and the Mitsubishi Corporation.
They say that their new joint venture – e5 Lab – will work to develop and promote greater use of these relatively clean modes of marine transport.
Together, they intend to consolidate their technologies and networks to develop a platform that will provide services to support electrically powered vessels and other emissions reducing technologies.
They also plan to build the world’s first zero-emission tanker by 2021.
It will be a coastal vessel powered by large-capacity batteries, designed to operate in Tokyo Bay.
