Bernard has over 12 years of experience in the Merchant Navy, and holds a PhD in the Assurance of Complex Systems from the department of Computer Science at the University York, and a BEng (Hons) in Electro-Mechanical Power Engineering from Loughborough University of Technology.
He is currently a fellow of Centre for Assuring Autonomy at York, and his academic affiliations include:
Bernard’s industry experiences spans both classification societies and maritime technology development. In 1993, he joined Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, where he served as the Global Head of Electrotechnical Systems until 2016. He then transitioned into the manufacturing and research sector, first with Rolls-Royce Marine (2017) and is currently with Kongsberg Maritime specialising in Regulatory Development and Maritime Autonomy.
He is an active participant in various research and special interest groups and holds advisory roles on the Technical Committees of two leading Classification Societies. Additionally, he serves as an advisor to the Danish Maritime Authority at the IMO.
