Corporate Governance and Ethical Leadership in Maritime Trade

The maritime landscape in the modern age especially in the post-2025 era, is characterised by a decisive shift from voluntary sustainability to climate accountability and compliance obligations, driven by complete intra-EU shipping emissions included under the EU Emission Trading System, mandatory FuelEU Maritime reporting and stricter Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rating. As the maritime/shipping sector account for more than 90% of global trade and about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, it faces a double necessity of sustaining economic efficiency and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. So, the paper evaluates how companies can integrate ambitions for profits with ethical and environmental responsibilities via decarbonization strategies, plus the adoption of alternative fuels like methanol, LNG, and future considerations of ammonia and hydrogen fuels/technologies. The adoption of marine diesel or gas engines enhanced with other alternative fuels such as hydrogen and technological innovations like AI integrations, will be assessed to determine how they reduce emissions and costs simultaneously. Furthermore, the study highlights critical environmental responsibilities, pollution prevention and sustainable ship energy management. Emphasis is placed on data transparency generated by the existing operating system and optimised Artificial Intelligence systems to ensure compliance with regulatory obligations, audit or inspection readiness and success. Therefore, the paper discusses how regulatory obligations and technological innovation are aligned with the ethical responsibilities of the shipping companies to promote a more resilient and sustainable maritime future.
