Session Three: Low and zero carbon fuels
This presentation explores the sustainability challenges faced by marine fuel suppliers and traders amid increasing regulatory pressure to decarbonize the maritime sector. It highlights the complexities of sourcing high-quality biofuels and the implications of fuel compatibility, availability, and certification. The session will give insight into the evolving role of ISO 8217:2024 in ensuring biofuel quality, and the importance of robust testing and traceability practices. It will examine elements associated with bio products, specifically specifications – FAME and HVO specs - to illustrate the complexity of the evolving landscape. It will also highlight the need to balance between compliance, product quality, and commercial viability. Participants will hopefully leave with a deeper understanding of the operational and regulatory hurdles the industry is going to face, and the critical role to play in supporting sustainable shipping.
