Dr Jonathan Earthy
Principal Human Factors Coordinator - Technical Directorate, Lloyd’s Register
Dr Earthy has worked for Lloyd's Register for more than 30 years. He is technical authority for human factors (HF) in LR Marine&Offshore, including the R&D programme and the introduction of Ergonomics into Class. His technical speciality is the assurance of the quality of Human Factors Integration and human-centred design, with special reference to advanced ICT. His other research interests are the introduction of human factors into the marine industry, standardisation of human factors, human-centred artificial intelligence, sociotechnical systems, and system resilience. Recent external projects include the Norwegian HUMANE study of sociotechnical aspects of maritime autonomous systems, the EU OCEAN project on enhanced ships navigation systems and the OpenBridge series of maritime user interface projects from AHO in Norway.
Jonathan has a BSc from Durham and a PhD from Aston. He is founding secretary of the LR Rules Human Factors Panel and was technical supervisor of the award-winning LRF Alert! human element awareness-raising initiative. He is a member of the SIGTTO Human Element Focus Group, Maritime CHIRP Advisory Board, IMarEST Human Element Working Group and IMO Human Element Industry Group. He is a professor II at the University of Western Norway. He has participated in standards development since the mid-1980s and is chair of ISO TC159/SC4 Human-system interaction and IACS EG/Human Element. He is a special editor for the journal Interacting with Computers.
He has written seven standards, fifteen papers and book chapters, around 35 reviewed EC deliverables, and over 100 conference papers and magazine articles. He has convened or organised over 40 public invitation events, two conferences and three commercial tutorials.
