Recent discussions at IMO identify a potential gap between the tasks and responsibilities assigned to seafarers in relation to complex information technology and the human ability to discharge these duties. The presentation will start with an examination of two examples (MASS and alarm management) based on research and development carried out by Lloyd’s Register. It will then use the human-centred approach to explain the ethical issues that the gap raises. Progress towards solutions for the examples will be introduced
