Session One: Decarbonisation
CalMac Ferries has 30 years combined experience of operating Hybrid Diesel-Electric ferries over the last decade, has recently brought into service a duel fuel Diesel-LNG ferry and is having 7 new all electric ferries built by CMAL. This talk will provide an overview of the practical experience of operating low carbon propulsion vessels (good and bad) and options for the future of net-zero carbon emission ferry operations on the West Coast of Scotland.
Alex is the Director of Standards and Performance at CalMac Ferries Ltd. CalMac is the largest UK Domestic Ferry operator managing a fleet of 35 ferries across the West Coast of Scotland providing a lifeline service to island and remote communities. Alex is an ex Royal Naval engineering officer who served as a Chief Engineer on Nuclear Submarines and has worked at CalMac for the last 5 years in engineering and safety assurance. Alex’s role includes supporting the move of CalMac towards a net zero future, working closely with CMAL who own the vessels that CalMac operate.
