Ecochlor holds a unique position in the shipping industry as the only company utilizing chlorine dioxide (ClO2) treatment technology for ballast water because it is patented by Ecochlor. The ballast water treatment system (BWTS) uses a two-step process to treat ballast water – filtration followed by disinfection with the well-known biocide, chlorine dioxide.
The system’s effectiveness is not impaired by variations in salinity, temperature, turbidity, organics, and vibration. The rugged, scalable, modular system offers flexibility in installation with design options for hazardous area installations. The automated system is crew-friendly, easy to operate and is highly energy efficient. Furthermore, the small size, low power, and low maintenance characteristics of the Ecochlor system make it ideally suited for installation on the world’s largest ships.
Ecochlor® BWTS has completed testing for USCG Type Approval and expects to submit an application in Q1 2017.

Being geographically located in an arid region and surrounded by two of the most economically significant water bodies (the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf), the kingdom of Saudi Arabia realized the importance of these water bodies as secured sources of water, food and energy. To ensure the sustainability of these natural resources and to mitigate negative impacts that could be associated with the rapid coastal developments, it was essential for the kingdom to have a national academic and research establishment that is specialized in marine sciences. Therefore, after going through a departmental stage (1987-1981) and an institutional stage (1981-1984), the Faculty of Marine Sciences has been established at King Abdulaziz University in 1984. Since then, this faculty has been the only Saudi academic establishment that offers B.Sc. programs in the four marine science disciplines.
Taking this into consideration and for academic quality assurance purposes, the faculty had these four B.Sc. programs academically accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) in 2014. In addition to the B.Sc. programs, the faculty also offers post-graduate programs (i.e. M.Sc. and Ph.D.) in the four marine science disciplines. Research wise, the faculty members have conducted outstanding research independently and in collaboration with local, regional and international research centers, institutions and organizations. The faculty has an advisory committee, including members representing the most relevant governmental and private establishments, to verify that the faculty’s learning and research outcomes are in agreement with the actual requirements of these and other establishments. Additionally, the faculty is going through the process of establishing the “Saudi Society for Marine Sciences” to provide related vocational and community services. Among the faculty vast resources are the R/V Al Azizi and the R/B Ulom Al Behar, that have been equipped with the most advanced navigational, scientific and hydrographic equipment.

Vessel machinery, whether engine room or deck equipment, is expected to operate in extremely harsh conditions and is subject to dynamic outside influences rarely encountered on land. As such the need for a rigid and thorough maintenance schedule is sacrosanct and well known in the industry.
Accelerated wear and what the insurance industry calls “catastrophic failure” (beyond repair with collateral damage) is nothing new to vessel operators. Add to this reduced manning levels and de-skilling and the likelihood of failure is regrettably increased many fold. Operators can however improve matters by adopting sophisticated yet simple condition monitoring practices that require minor intervention by the vessels crew, nor complex interpretation by shore staff.
Machinery that requires lubrication is the most likely to wear and subsequently fail if the lubricant becomes contaminated, breaks down or subjected to external stress from component overload. Visual indicators are often way too late and irreparable damage may well have already occurred. Today the practice of oil analysis as a maintenance procedure is widespread and as with all disciplines there are different levels of competence, service and application.
Spectro | Jet-Care are leaders in equipment condition monitoring for the global marine industry and with over 43 years of specialist knowledge our high precision services ensure better understanding of the health of equipment as well as oil performance and condition, combined with unrivalled customer service.
The analysis of oil, hydraulic fluid, debris particles, filters, grease and fuel samples is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day from our three ISO 17025:2017 accredited laboratories based in the UK, USA and Switzerland. The data generated can also anticipate equipment faults through precise analysis trending techniques as well as bringing optimal operation and maintenance performance.
