Overview
The Guild of Benevolence of the IMarEST is inviting nominations for new Trustees who can contribute valuable skills, experience, and expertise to the Board. The Guild is governed by a Board of Trustees, comprising 12 members, including the Guild’s officers. Trustees serve a term of three years, with the option to seek re-election for an additional three years, in accordance with Guild Rules.
Eligibility
To be eligible, candidates must be Members of the Guild.
Membership is open to:
- Past and present members of the Institute
- Past and present employees of the Institute or the Guild
- Individuals professionally engaged in the marine sector as engineers, scientists, or technologists
- Any other individuals, at the sole discretion of the Board
Responsibilities
- To ensure that the Guild and its representatives function within the law and in line with the Rules, continually striving for best practice in governance.
- To determine the overall direction and development of the Guild through good governance and clear strategic planning.
- To uphold the legal duty invested in the position of Trustee, undertaking such duties in a way that adds to public confidence and trust in the Guild.
- To maintain absolute confidentiality about all sensitive and confidential information received in the course of carrying out the duties of a Trustee of the Guild.
Duties
- Ensuring the Guild complies with legislative and regulatory requirements, and acts within the confines of its Rules.
- Promoting and developing the Guild in order for it to grow and maintain its relevance to society.
- Maintaining sound financial management of the Guild’s resources, ensuring expenditure is in line with its objectives, and that investment activities meet agreed standards and policies.
- Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the Guild and its resources
- Striving for best practice in good governance.
- Reviewing at regular intervals the Rules of the Guild to take account of changing circumstances and/or legislation.
- Acting in the best interests of the Guild at all times.

Nominations received after the closing date of 15 February 2026 will not be considered.
