International Representation

The IMarEST holds formal recognition across a range of intergovernmental organisations at a level unrivalled by similar organisations of our kind.

These include:

Our international work is one of the most important roles we play as a learned society. Our contributions ensure that existing and emerging marine activities are safe and technically, environmentally and economically sound. We provide invaluable impartial professional advice of the highest standard to governing bodies trying to develop reasonable regulation of marine and maritime activities.

Our contributions to the (inter)governmental decision-making process support the development of unambiguous, technically informed, scientifically supported and practically implementable outcomes.

Members are central to this work. They are involved with providing informed and expert views in response to consultations and calls for evidence for the development of national, regional and international regulation. They also represent us by sitting on committees and joining IMarEST delegations at intergovernmental organisations and standards bodies, such as the UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Our international representation is supported by the activities of our divisions and branches located across the globe which provide a local focus to activities, networks, conferences, meetings and events. They also help us develop and maintain links and partnerships with people and organisations in key regions in the maritime world.
