Although the need to decarbonise the maritime industry is widely acknowledged, the pathways to achieve net-zero emissions targets are associated with considerable uncertainty. Stringent environmental regulations, volatile fuel prices, alternative fuels, development of emerging technologies, and concerns around supply chains and infrastructure present both challenges and opportunities to the maritime industry.
In an effort to address some of these issues, the IMarEST Scottish Branch is organising its first symposium: Maritime Industry Decarbonisation - The Paradigm to Achieve Net-Zero Targets.
This symposium will discuss contemporary challenges within the maritime industry, bringing together scientists, engineers, operators and professionals from across academia, government, research institutions and industry bodies.
Attendees can expect the exchange of ideas, techniques, methods, technologies, and best practices on:
- Decarbonisation and net-zero targets
- Sustainable technologies and innovation
- Sustainability challenges
- Policy & regulation
- Low and zero carbon fuels
- UK ports, infrastructure and supply chains
- Human element and skills gap.
The event will consist of a mixture of invited speeches, presentations based on submitted papers, and a panel discussion on the question: Scottish maritime industry decarbonisation: miracle or utopia?
