Industrial facilities and vessels increasingly depend on large volumes of digital engineering information that must be exchanged and understood across disciplines, organisations, and software systems. While significant progress has been made in digitalisation, much engineering knowledge remains locked in documents, databases and application-specific data models, requiring extensive manual interpretation and validation.

This webinar introduces the ISO 23726 Ontology-Based Industrial Data (OBI) standards series and, in particular, ISO 23726-3 Industrial Data Ontology (IDO), which provides a standardised semantic foundation for representing industrial engineering knowledge in a machine-interpretable form. By formally capturing the meaning of engineering concepts and the relationships between them, IDO enables software systems to move beyond simple data exchange toward knowledge-based interoperability.

The presentation will demonstrate how semantic technologies, knowledge graphs and logical reasoning can support engineering automation, improve data quality, validate design consistency and facilitate information integration across heterogeneous systems and organisational boundaries.

A practical demonstration will be provided through the IDO Valve Use Case, showing how engineering knowledge relating to valves, piping systems, process requirements and design constraints can be represented semantically and used to automatically infer new knowledge, identify inconsistencies, verify compliance with requirements and support engineering decision-making. The example illustrates how ontology-based approaches can reduce manual effort while increasing consistency and interoperability across engineering workflows in the process, offshore and maritime sectors.
