The Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) of ships, the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carriers, have received widespread commendation on both their innovative design and the collaborative approach taken between government and industry to deliver this impressive capability.
HMS Queen Elizabeth and sister ship, HMS Prince of Wales, are the biggest, most powerful and the most advanced surface ships ever built for the Royal Navy. The 65,000 tonnes vessels are certainly impressive in scale: each ship deck could accommodate three football pitches and are a step change in capability from the 20,000 tonnes Invincible Class. They are literally the UK nation’s flagships and will be so for around the next 50 years.
HMS Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carrier (QNLZ) procured by the UK Ministry of Defence for the Royal Navy is the first aircraft carrier in the world to utilise integrated full electric power and propulsion system IFEP. QNLZ presented a step change in size and complexity. The presentation will cover the merits of IFEP, QNLZ large equipment descriptions, methods and processes adopted from early design phases, through testing and trials undertaken to ensure all equipment is set-to-work in a safe and efficient manner.
Dr Benatmane has 30 years experience in electrical systems engineering in industrial and marine applications. This lecture is a follow up to a fascinating lecture he gave to us last year and we are extremely lucky to catch his expert knowledge in this field prior to his retirement as Marine Naval Solution Leader for GE Vernon Power Conversion and Storage.
