As engineering careers and projects become increasingly international, understanding how professional registration and licensure operate across borders is becoming ever more important. This webinar will provide a UK and Engineering Council perspective on Chartered Engineer (CEng), Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States, and Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada.
The session will explore the similarities and important differences between these systems. It will consider the UK’s competence-based approach to CEng registration, compared with the state-based PE licensing system in the United States and provincial and territorial regulation of P.Eng. in Canada. While their regulatory frameworks differ, all three provide important assurance of professional competence, ethical behaviour and accountability.
The session will also examine the changing international recognition landscape, including IntPE and the Engineering Council’s work to improve professional mobility through mutual recognition, including its agreement with NCEES in the United States.
Looking beyond initial qualification, the session will consider the career-long value of professional registration: strengthening professional identity, demonstrating competence and leadership, supporting continuing professional development, enhancing employer and client confidence, and enabling international mobility.
The central theme is simple: international recognition should remove unnecessary duplication while maintaining rigorous professional standards and public protection.
