The Ships that defined the Viking Age
Speaker: Mal Waugh
The Viking Longship is the essence of the Viking age. These ships, arguably, are key to understanding the Nordic sailor - explorer – trader – settler culture. Without the Viking Longship there would have been no Viking age.
The presentation is a mix of culture, marine archaeology, reconstruction for museum display versus historic ship reproduction, naval architecture versus built-by-eye rule of thumb plus some travel recommendations.
Mal Waugh is now a retired Naval Architect. Some years ago, as a Royal Australian Navy apprentice, he was taught both carvel and clinker (lapstrake) timber construction.
Fuel Cells for marine application
Speaker: Jogchum Bruinsma, Nedstack
Jogchum Bruinsma is the commercial director for Nedstack, a Dutch company specialising in the development and manufacture of fuel-cells for land and maritime applications. Jogchum will discuss the characteristics of PEM fuel-cells and their application for boats and ships.
