Legacy Meets Innovation: Anchoring the Future of Marine Engineering
The IMarEST Student Section at the Indian Maritime University serves as the convergence point for India’s finest marine engineering talent and the global maritime community. While the section is a new initiative, its foundations are built upon the illustrious history of its host institute Indian Maritime University, Kolkata Campus, formerly known as DMET (Directorate of Marine Engineering Training).
Since its inception in 1949, this campus has been the cradle of maritime leadership in India, producing Chief Engineers, Technical Superintendents, and Industry CEOs who have shaped global shipping for over seven decades. The establishment of the IMarEST Student Section marks the next evolution of this legacy, transforming the campus from a training ground for operators into a hub for innovators.
Our Vision
We aim to bridge the critical gap between academic curriculum and the strategic realities of the modern maritime industry. Our vision is to cultivate a culture of Research & Development (R&D) among cadets, moving beyond traditional machinery operations to tackle urgent global challenges such as Decarbonisation, Digitalization, and Alternative Propulsion.
Through technical symposia, expert-led workshops, and direct engagement with the IMarEST global network, this section empowers cadets to contribute to the "Net-Zero" future of shipping. We are not just engineering ships; we are engineering the future leaders who will sail them.
Join us to navigate the transition from tradition to technology.
