PURPOSE:
The Cable Engineer is responsible to the chief cable engineer to carryout cable engineering duties and responsibilities within the ships cable engineering department, ensuring all work is completed in a safe and environmentally responsible way. As second in the department to the chief cable engineer it is expected that the cable engineer will support the chief cable engineer in all aspects of the role. During cable operations, the cable engineer is expected to cover the duties of deputy power safety officer as defined within the cable operations manual and the SSEMS and maybe required to deputise for the chief cable engineer.
DUTIES:
The cable engineer shall:

Deputise and take responsibility for the department’s efficient and safe operation during the chief cable engineer’s absence.
- Organise and be responsible for the day-to-day running of the department as directed by the Chief Cable Engineer.
- As a senior officer, the cable engineer shall be responsible for overseeing crew / personnel management within the cable engineering department, including ensuring discipline is maintained onboard in accordance with the Code of Conduct for the Merchant Navy and the provisions of the Just Culture procedure.
- Uphold the Company Safety and Environmental policies and procedures and ensure that defects, incidents, near misses or unplanned events are reported and investigated in accordance with applicable company procedure.
- Shall be responsible to act as deputy head of department for all cable officer’s, Jointers and cable crew, ensuring compliance with company procedures, control of work on deck, and established good practice.
- Undertake back-to-back duties with the chief cable engineer during cable operations and be capable of carrying out the cable engineering requirements of the operation being performed.
- Be responsible and support the chief cable engineer in ensuring the correct setup and operation of Makai, cable lay monitoring and navigation / survey software / tools used during cable operations.
- Support the chief cable engineer with daily and final reporting and logging of cable operations during cable installation and maintenance projects.
- Take responsibility of the test room and ensure that all logs, records and accounts are correctly maintained.
- Undertake and manage the maintenance, testing and calibration of all equipment under the control of the department.
- Be responsible to the chief cable engineer for the compilation of data and records following repairs and installation.
- Supervise cable jointing and assess the radiographs and quality of cable joints. > When directed by the chief cable engineer, shall undertake the responsibility and duties of the deputy shipboard power safety officer during cable operations, as specified within the company power safety requirements contained in cable operations manual and the SSEMS.
- Ensure compliance with x-ray and optical (laser) safety procedures and if directed by the chief cable engineer, may undertake the duty of radiation protection officer as outlined within the cable operations manual and the SSEMS.
- Conduct performance management reviews and appraisals for subordinate officers as required by the SSEMS.
- Act as the ships IT support function, where liaison with shore-based IT department will be necessary.
- Be prepared to adopt other duties in support of ship management or cable operations as assigned by the chief cable engineer.
