PURPOSE:
The Second Officer is responsible to; and shall undertake safety, environmental and operational duties as allocated or directed by the Chief Officer and Master.
The Second Officer role incorporates; DP Operator, senior navigation / deck watchkeeper or watch leader in addition to day work duties such as; Ships medical officer, GMDSS Officer or supporting the Shipboard Safety Officer with Safety Administration or investigation. The duties within the role may be individually assigned by the Chief Officer depending on vessel location, mode of operations and staffing levels.
DUTIES:
The Second Officer is responsible to;
- Undertake the role and duties of Navigation Officer and shall report directly to the Master for all voyage planning and ensure company navigational procedures and standing orders are adhered to at all times.
- Act as Officer of the Watch (OOW) / deck watch-leader during vessel operations (at sea) and whilst loading and discharging cable, equipment or plant as required by the Chief Officer (whilst in port).
- Undertake the role of DP watchkeeper, when required.
- Ensure all bridge and navigational equipment is prepared for sea as required by statute and company procedures.
- Ensure all navigational equipment is functioning correctly and to report equipment defects in accordance with SSEMS requirements.
- Facilitate vessel safety familiarisation and training as directed by the Chief Officer.
- When assigned the duty of Medical Officer:
- Assist the Chief Officer and Master with first aid or medical care of crewmembers.
- Ensure medical stores / equipment are maintained and ordered in accordance with SSEMS and flag state requirements.
- Comply with Medical Procedures and Responsibilities GM-J-EMGY-KA-0006.
- Assist the Safety Officer by supporting shipboard safety administration, maintenance of safety records, and support investigations as instructed.
- Provide onboard oversight and administration of QHSE Ship Management Software, including training, maintenance of reports, ship certification, and the monitoring of office synchronisation.
- Assist the Chief Officer and Master with preparation of paperwork which may be required by Customers / Charterers Company etc…
- Uphold the Company Safety and Environmental policies and procedures and ensure that defects, incidents, near misses or unplanned events are reported in accordance with applicable company procedure.
- Ensure crew performing operations under their supervision; undertake all work in accordance with established safe working practices, and that all tasks are risk assessed with appropriate control measures in place prior to commencement.
- Carry out vessel and cable operations in accordance with the Masters Project Execution Plan or instructions.
- Support the Chief Officer by; overseeing, testing, disinfection and management of the safety of fresh water systems in line with flag state and company requirements.
- Undertake or execute any other duties, as required or assigned by the Chief Officer.
