Subsea Engineer

PURPOSE:
To ensure that the equipment spread is operated and maintained in an efficient, organised, and controlled manner, and in accordance with the manufacturers operating manuals and the company’s procedures. Carry out engineering duties within the back deck department, support the back deck team under the direction of the Chief Subsea Engineer. Develop engineer’s knowledge and awareness so fully conversant with the Chief Subsea Engineer role.
DUTIES:
The Subsea Engineer shall:

Uphold the Company Safety and Environmental policies and procedures and ensure that defects, incidents, near misses or unplanned events are reported and investigated in accordance with applicable company procedure.

Be responsible for ensuring the Subsea department, crew, ST’s and JST’s under their direction, undertake all work in accordance with established safe working practices, and that all tasks are risk assessed with appropriate control measures in place prior to commencement.

In conjunction with the Chief Subsea Engineer, be responsible for overseeing personnel management within the subsea department, including ensuring discipline is maintained onboard in accordance with the Code of Conduct for the Merchant Navy and the provisions of the Just Culture procedure.

Take responsibility for the systems efficient and safe operation during either the Chief Subsea Engineer’s absence or when in supervisory position of the subsea system.

Be fully conversant with the duties of the Chief Subsea Engineer and be capable of launching and recovering the Submersible and making correct operational decisions where necessary.

Ensure that the Submersible is operated within the stated insurance warranty conditions.

Manage the system during periods of non-operational maintenance and refurbishment when no Chief Subsea Engineer is assigned to the system.

Manage all aspects of the Submersible team including allocation of work and provide technically balanced watches in the absence of the Chief Subsea Engineer.

In the absence of or alongside the Chief Subsea Engineer, co-ordinate the necessary maintenance, repair, or overhaul of all equipment, ensuring that the submersible system is running efficiently and sustained in a fully operational condition in readiness for any eventuality, i.e., planned, or unscheduled projects.

In the absence of the Chief Subsea Engineer, immediately inform the Master and all relevant departments in the Company, if submersible system is going to be or has become non- operational.

To administer and assist the Chief Subsea Engineer with the system reporting procedures and returns to the Company.

Be fully conversant with the operational aspects such as host vessel manoeuvrability, weather considerations, current profiles, and seabed materials.

To assist with the supervision and progression/training of Junior System Technicians and System Technicians.

Be prepared to adopt other duties within the remit of systems specialist discipline as agreed and advised prior to appointment and by the Master and/or shore management.
