PURPOSE:

To perform navigation, watch-keeping (OOW), safety and environmental duties in support of vessel operations and maintenance under the direction of the Chief Officer.

Cable ships under operation and management by Global Marine will normally operate with at least two third officers. Where more than one third officer is appointed to a vessel, the duties identifying responsibility for LSA and FFA shall be identified on the Ship’s Muster List.

DUTIES:

The third officer shall:

  • Undertake watch-keeping duties, as OOW, in support of vessel operations as directed by the Chief Officer.
  • Comply with all Company and Statutory safety of navigation and watchkeeping guidelines.
  • Take or order any action necessary in the absence of superior officers, to preserve the safety of the ship and lives should hazardous conditions arise.
  • When allocated by the Chief Officer: 
  • Ensure that all firefighting equipment is maintained, certificated and inspected in compliance with SOLAS, flag state, class and company requirements.
  • Ensure that all lifesaving equipment is maintained, certificated and inspected in compliance with SOLAS, flag state, class and company requirements.
  • Uphold the Company Safety and Environmental policies and procedures and ensure that defects, incidents, near misses or unplanned events are reported in accordance with applicable company procedure.
  • Facilitate vessel safety familiarisation and training as directed by the Chief Officer.
  • Ensure crew performing operations under their supervision; undertake all work in accordance with established safe working practices, and that all tasks are risk assessed with appropriate control measures in place prior to commencement.
  • Carry out vessel and cable operations in accordance with the Masters Project Execution Plan or instructions.
  • Ensure that deck department watches, safety and security patrols and procedures are maintained.
  • Ensure that all visitors to the vessel are met and attended to.
  • Be familiar with emergency duties and support compliance with company procedures, policies, work permits and instructions, and the Code of Safe Working Practices.
  • Undertake or execute any other duties assigned by the Chief Officer, Master or Second Officer.
