David Loosley steps down as IMarEST Chief Executive
David Loosley will be stepping down as chief executive of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) in June.
David has been chief executive since November 2011 and during this time he has taken the Institute on a journey of transformation. He initiated an ambitious five year corporate plan in 2013 which drastically changed the Institute. He improved back office functions through lean methodology and digitisation to deliver member services globally and increase efficiency. Through the introduction of diversified revenue streams and a reduction in the financial operating deficit, the organisation began to see financial growth.
Over the coming months, David will be working with the Board of Trustees and the executive team to ensure a smooth transition and will continue to represent the IMarEST until the summer.
Commenting on the news, the Chair of the IMarEST’s Board of Trustees, Richard Vie, said “Over the last 8 years, David has grown the profile of the Institute enormously, encouraged internationalisation and broadened its demographics to support diversity and inclusion. Many new and exciting member services have been introduced to provide support at all stages of career development and external engagement and partnerships developed to ensure the Institute provides a real public benefit. The overall financial performance and hence sustainability of the Institute has been greatly improved under David’s stewardship and for this we are very grateful. David’s passion for the marine environment and the sustainable use of marine resources shines through all this and has ensured that the Institute lives up to its mission of sharing knowledge based on integrity, quality and fairness. David will be missed, it has been a pleasure working with him and we wish him all the best in his new position.”
David said “It’s been a privilege to lead the Institute through a very exciting period and I believe I’ll be leaving the Institute in a much stronger place than when I joined. It feels like a very different organisation: more impactful; more innovative; more open; more inclusive and more efficient. And that’s down to the committed volunteers all around the world, my brilliant executive teams in London and Singapore and in our associated businesses Marine People and MLA College. Thank you everyone”.
