Forging a Sustainable Ship Building & Repair Legacy in the GCC

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is building a new maritime legacy rooted in innovation and responsibility, according to industry leaders who gathered for a panel discussion on 'Ship Building and Ship Repair in the GCC' on the Main Stage of the Saudi Maritime & Logistics Congress, the largest annual global event for the shipping and logistics industries in Saudi Arabia.

Moderated by Nikeel Idnani, Hon. Secretary of the IMarEST UAE branch, the session examined how the region is cementing its position as a strategic hub for marine engineering and maintenance. The panel's discussion highlighted the GCC's rapid emergence in the Ship Repair and Ship Building sector, propelled by ambitious infrastructure projects and a boom in maritime trade. As major investments, such as those in Saudi Arabia’s 12 million square meters, International Maritime Industries (IMI) which is the largest full-service yard in the MENA region, are set to drive regional capacity, experts highlighted the path toward a future defined by intentional growth. While it was a panel discussion, the fireside-style conversation was warm & engaging with the moderator weaving in a quote & thematic metaphors which added the extra flair.

Eirini Skouloudi, Technical Sales Manager EMEA at PPG, introduced the latest advancements in sustainable anti-fouling coatings & electrostatic application (ESTA) technology, setting new benchmarks for efficient hull protection & performance. She spotlighted PPG’s biocide-free silicone-based coating (SIGMAGLIDE® 2390) & Copper-free Anti Fouling (NEXEON™ 810), which, combined with ESTA, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 35% & cut paint waste. These innovations promote smoother hulls, minimize environmental waste & help shipowners meet IMO decarbonization targets - accentuated by PPG’s 50th successful ESTA docking milestone on VLCC SIDR managed by Bahri Ship Management.

Renowned maritime, trade and offshore lawyer Rania Tadros (Managing Partner & Global Head of Maritime and Offshore, Stephenson Harwood) highlighted critical considerations for mitigating risk in shipbuilding contracts. "I focused on identifying key risks for both the buyer and builder and how to mitigate against them from a legal perspective," she noted as a panelist.

In his remarks, panelist Torgeir Sterri (Senior Vice President, DNV Director Offshore Classification) highlighted the critical role of forward-thinking strategies. “In our rapidly evolving industry, it is crucial that we embrace the winds of change and position ourselves as pioneers of the future, he stated. “Leveraging AI for strategic decision-making will enable us to concentrate on what truly makes a difference. Our industry stands at a crossroads, and it is incumbent upon us to ensure that the next generation understands the significance of shipping, oil and gas, and renewables. By doing so, we will inspire them to join our ranks and drive this transformation forward”.

Sharing an attendee's perspective, panelist Ajay Thanki (Regional Business Development Manager, GMA Middle East) described the session as a "perfect platform to discuss the ongoing key issues within the Ship building & Ship repair industry and offer the most effective sustainable solution." He noted the dynamic exchange between speakers and the audience and expressed his commitment to engaging in future events.

Alexandros Nomikos, Vice President of Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) at International Maritime Industries, highlighted how the GCC is at a pivotal moment in its shipbuilding and ship repair journey and how IMI is leading in this transformation, offering an expansive repertoire of large-scale shipbuilding and MRO services for all types of ships and rigs. He emphasized IMI’s integration of AI, IoT, and green technologies supporting its commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, and shaping the future of the Kingdom’s maritime industry commensurate with the Saudi Vision 2030.

Bringing the immersive discussion to a close, moderator Nikeel Idnani reflected on the session’s insights, stating, “We’re gathered in the strategic city of Dammam, where tradition meets transformation & a new maritime narrative is being forged, not only about steel & propulsion, but also in principle & profound purpose. Let us carry these convictions beyond conferences and the boardroom, into the frameworks, alliances & tangible actions that will define the next era of the Ship Building and Ship Repair industry.”

The IMarEST UAE branch and Seatrade Maritime have enjoyed a close relationship since 2016 and the collaboration at SMLC 2025 reinforces that close bond. The session, viewed by 193 industry leaders & innovation champions, bolstered a call to action for cross-border collaboration and a shared commitment to propel Ship Repair and Ship Building in the GCC.
