Notice from the Offshore Oil and Gas SIG Chair - April 2024

SIG Chair Nimi Abili introduces the relaunched SIG.

The IMarEST is reactivating the Special Interest Group (SIG) to focus on the Offshore Oil and Gas Sector of the industry, and to be the voice of the Institute on all Oil and Gas related issues.

The purpose of the Group will be to raise the profile of the Oil and Gas sector to its members, and thus (1) increase membership, (2) increase the number of technical meetings related to Oil and Gas themes, and (3) raise the profile of the IMarEST in Oil and Gas geographic regions globally.

The SIG will advise the IMarEST on key strategic themes and topics, technical subjects, and trends in the Industry. Also, the group will help to promote the Oil and Gas sector, and create links between the Institute and industry.

The Oil and Gas industry is faced with several technical challenges, for example; carbon emission reduction, operational efficiency and safety, integrated offshore facilities with floating wind, ultra-deepwater, extra high pressure - high temperature, Arctic, risers/pipelines, subsea processing and boosting, FLNG, regulatory policy, etc. Also, key strategic themes, such as decarbonisation, sustainability, digitalisation, CCUS, hydrogen, energy security and affordability, multidimensional energy transition, are all important strategic issues that need to be addressed. The IMarEST needs to be positioned on being able to answer to these key technical and strategic challenges, and other key themes, at a professional level.

This initiative should increase membership in the key Oil and Gas hubs around the world, and it would initially focus on Aberdeen, Houston, London, and Perth. The ultimate aim is to globally raise the profile of the IMarEST in key regions (Europe, Americas, Far East, Australasia and Africa/M.East).

Initially the SIG will be set up globally between Houston, London, Aberdeen, and Perth. The SIG will meet up a few times per year, if possible, and undertake conference call meetings.
