Abstract
In the face of stiff competition, cost reduction and globalisation, marine industry today require a quantum leap in the entire ship design-and-build process to keep abreast of and to differentiate itself in a marketplace that is fast moving towards digital technologies. Industry 4.0 which promises a paradigm shift from traditional segregated horizontal and vertical value network manufacturing process to horizontal-vertical integration and fully connected manufacturing system is fast gaining worldwide attention. This presentation focuses on three key areas: Firstly, an overview of Industry 4.0 will be presented and how it is transforming the manufacturing industry worldwide. Following which, the concept of Industry 4.0 will be extended to marine and offshore and its relevant applications. Finally, examples of digital manufacturing relating to Industry 4.0 that are implemented in Sembcorp Marine will also be shared. Through digitalisation and cyber-physical integration, it is envisioned that Industry 4.0 can transform the entire design, manufacturing and operation process into an integrated smart product through-life for ships in the near future.


About the Speaker
Joo Hock Ang is currently a senior manager in Research and Development (R&D). He joined Sembcorp Marine (SCM) in 2001 and involved in various functions such as production (hull), project management and engineering design. He is currently leading the development of advanced manufacturing in SCM, which include drones, additive manufacturing, Internet of Things and Industry 4.0. He obtained his BEng (Hons) in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from University of Strathclyde, MSc in Management of Technology from National University of Singapore and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Glasgow.
