Abstract
A Safety and Shipping review completed in 2022 [Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS)] , identified loss trends and highlighted several risk challenges for the maritime sector as follows:
 

A total of 892 total maritime losses between 2012 and 2021
54 maritime losses for vessels over 100 GT in 2021
27 of the 54 losses in 2021 were cargo vessels
3000 shipping incidents in 2021 – Machinery damage as the top cause.


“The Case for Safety Cases” will provide various industry perspectives on the practicable application of the Safety Case methodology focusing on “High Consequence / Low Frequency events” and the demonstration of ALARP.

About the Speaker
David Johnson began his career in the Royal Australian Air Force as an apprentice Aircraft Structural Engineer in 1979 and after 18 years in the aircraft industry he moved into the offshore oil and gas industry as an Occupational Health Safety and Quality professional.


After 20 years as the Regional HSEQ and Regulatory Compliance Manager for an international offshore drilling contractor; David started his own consulting firm, HSR Management Pty Ltd, working with various companies to assist them with all facets relating to Health, Safety, Risk and Quality with a strong focus on system development, maintenance of systems, compliance and validation including Safety Cases for the oil and gas industry. His current role with Assurance Reliability Compliance (ARC) is HSSEQ Manager / Project Manager for Validations under the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage (Safety & Environmental) Regulations 2009 (Australia).


David is also a trained and certified auditor for ISO Quality (9001), Environment (14001), OH&S (45001) and IMO’s The ISM Code (The International Standard for the Safe Management and Operation of Ships, and for Managing Pollution Prevention) and the ISPS Code (The International Ship and Port Facility Security Code)
