Winners of the IMarEST Awards 2019/20
The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology have a number of awards that those in the industry can apply or be nominated for. The winners for various awards for 2019 are listed below.
Denny Medals
The prestigious Denny Medal, established in 1893, is awarded to the best paper published in one of the IMarEST’s peer-reviewed journals.

IMarEST Outstanding Contribution Awards
The IMarEST Outstanding Contribution Awards recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution within a particular area of the marine sector.
Diane Fitch - Liverpool John Moores University
Diane was nominated for this award in recognition of her contribution to the marine industry through the Maritime SuperSkills Project which aims to provide employers with the dedicated resources needed to map and develop apprenticeship standards for the marine and maritime sector. Driven by regional need, the project outcomes have national relevance. The result is a skills progression pipeline for career progression within this growing sector, from school age upwards.
Dr Ian Tuersley – Warwick University
Ian was nominated for this award in recognition of his engagement with the IMarEST ‘European International Submarine Races’ and the US equivalent competitions over the last seven years and the educational benefit that he has developed and disseminated in the higher education sector as a result of this engagement.
Laurie Prandolini Research Fellowship
The Laurie Prandolini Research Fellowship provides an annual grant, for up to two years, to a Doctoral candidate or post-Doctoral researcher in a marine discipline i.e. marine engineering, marine science or marine technology.
Christelle Auguste - Australian Maritime College
PhD Tidal energy in Banks Strait between Clarke Island and Cape Portland in the northeast tip of Tasmania and the Clarence Strait, Northern Territory under the auspices of the AUSTen (Australian Tidal Energy) project.
Stanley Gray Fellowship
Stanley Gray Fellowships are awarded to students judged to be of outstanding potential to enable a significant piece of work to be undertaken in an approved marine engineering/science/technology subject to Doctorate (PhD) or post-Doctorate level.

David Henderson Inspiring Journey Grant
The David Henderson Inspiring Journey Grant is a £5,000 grant awarded to the best idea for an exciting and exceptional journey which will be documented - through blogs and social media - and will inspire the public to think about the oceans differently and ensure we use them safely and sustainably.
Michelle Caputo for her trip titled: Around Madagascar in 80 Days – The Search for the Elusive Humpback Dolphin
Royal Navy Operational Award (Ratings)
The award is given to the eligible individual who has the best applied professional engineering leadership or judgement to overcome a particular engineering difficulty or for technical innovation that has contributed significantly to the generation, maintenance or enhancement of operational capability or effectiveness in any engineering role, including in the UK.
