For the past 15 years the UK offshore basin has been pivoting from hydrocarbon exploration and production to a more diverse set of energy solutions which now include fixed and floating offshore wind power, wave and tidal, carbon transportation and storage , hydrogen and its derivatives, and different forms of energy storage. Successful transition depends on a combination of factors which include a well understood subsurface, extensive UK experience in offshore engineering, and innovative suppliers and academia, all of which can adapt technologies and respond to new requirements. This talk will give a perspective of the UK’s offshore energy plans and opportunities, and the key technical challenges across oil and gas, carbon capture and storage (CCS), renewables, hydrogen and e-fuels, and energy storage.
