The Challenge: A Zero-Emission Cargo Ship 

Over 80% of global trade is carried by sea, making cargo vessels essential to the world economy and major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. 

The 2025 WJB Young Members’ Design Challenge invites you to design a zero-emissions cargo vessel capable of global operations.

Our teams will be designing a vessel: 

  • to eliminate through life emissions via smart material selection
  • energy reduction measures
  • renewables
  • alternative fuels
  • considered construction practices and sustainable vessel disposal measures.

Complete the Google Form or email  [email protected] no later than 21 September 2025 

Additional Information: 

  1. Teams are required to generate a short interim report and create a poster showcasing their designs prior to the Finals Evening; during this evening, teams will then be asked to deliver a short presentation, followed by answering questions from a Panel of Judges.
  2. The Design Challenge is open to teams of 2-4 members; at least one team member must attend all design challenge events in-person, and all team members must attend the finals night in-person.
  3. No members of the team shall hold Chartered Engineer Status.
  4. Further details and rules of the Design Challenge will be made available at the Launch Night.
