Overview

Our Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are wide-ranging and cover the breadth of marine engineering, science and technology.

Each SIG is led by a committee, which is responsible for, among other things, ensuring the group has tangible, deliverable outputs and encouraging membership growth of the group and the Institute.

SIG committee members come from within the SIG's wider membership. A wide range of SIGs exist, reflecting the depth of knowledge and scale of marine activity that IMarEST members are involved in. You can view the full list here.

What roles are needed?

Each SIG committee has at least one Chair and an Honorary Secretary who lead and organise the group, occasionally representing the SIG where necessary. They are supported by SIG committee members.

We are currently looking to recruit committee members and Honorary Secretaries for some select SIGs.

Committee Member

SIG committee members are responsible for:

  • Ensuring the SIG has tangible outputs which can be delivered
  • Establishing workstreams,sub-groups or task forces as appropriate to deliver planned outputs
  • Supporting and encouraging growth in membership via participation in the SIGs
  • Overseeing and engaging with activity on the SIGs discussion channel on IMarEST Connect

Honorary Secretary

The Honorary Secretary shares their duties with the SIG Chair. They are responsible for:

  • Arranging SIG committee meetings, setting the agenda, and ensuring minutes or notes are taken as needed and communicated as appropriate
  • Ensuring the activities of the SIG are communicated to the Technical Leadership Committee (TLC) and the Technical and Policy Team
  • Participating in the activities of and representing the SIG at the TLC

A SIG's committee is expected to meet on a quarterly basis, whether in person or online. All SIG members are expected to abide by the IMarEST Rules of Professional Conduct.

You can apply to join a SIG via the form at the bottom of the page.

Relaunching SIGs

We're looking to speak to interested members in the below topics to help us relaunch some inactive SIGs:

  • Aquaculture
  • Global fisheries
  • Recycling of marine structures
  • Representation of women in the marine industry
  • Ocean governance

If you are an expert or have an interest in any of these topics and would like to know more about supporting a future SIG, please get in touch with the Technical & Policy Team at [email protected].
