FPSOs and other floating offshore assets operate in complex marine environments where technical casualties can have significant consequences for personnel safety, asset integrity, the environment and continuity of operations.

This proposed technical topic would explore the engineering and operational response to emergency situations affecting FPSOs and other floating offshore assets. The discussion could consider scenarios such as flooding and water ingress, loss of stability, structural damage, machinery or system failures, collision/contact incidents and other marine casualties. Particular attention could be given to the importance of rapid technical assessment and decision making during an emergency, including evaluation of vessel stability and structural integrity, identification of developing risks, consideration of appropriate mitigating actions, and effective communication between the offshore unit, operators, technical teams and other relevant stakeholders.

The topic could also examine the respective roles of asset operators, engineering/emergency response teams and Classification Societies in supporting casualty assessment, technical decision making, recovery planning and the safe continuation or restoration of operations.

Possible areas for discussion could include:

  • Emergency response preparedness for FPSOs and floating offshore units
  • Flooding, water ingress and stability assessment
  • Structural damage and integrity considerations following a casualty
  • Machinery and critical-system failures
  • Technical assessment and risk-based decision-making during emergencies
  • Communication and coordination between offshore personnel and shore-based technical teams
  • Role of Classification Societies and specialist engineering support
  • Lessons learned from marine/offshore casualty scenarios and their application to future emergency preparedness

Objective:

The objective would be to provide OOGSIG members with a practical technical perspective on how emergency-response engineering and asset-integrity principles can support safer and more effective management of casualty situations involving floating offshore assets.
