Learning from the past recognises that today’s safety challenges are shaped by long histories of innovation, failure, resilience and change. By examining historical evidence, from accidents and near misses to successful interventions, we can better understand risk, human factors and the effectiveness of past responses. This approach brings together diverse forms of knowledge, including archives, lived experience and cultural heritage, to inform decision‑making today. Learning from the past is not about hindsight, but about using evidence to identify patterns, inform policy, improve practice and build safer, more sustainable and resilient futures for people, communities and systems worldwide.
