Marine Warranty Surveying and Marine Salvage

  • Overview

The Marine Warranty Surveying and Marine Salvage Special Interest Group (MWS SIG) promotes the effective implementation of Marine Warranty Surveying (MWS) and Marine Salvage operations. 

MWS is a risk management service provided to the offshore and maritime industries, involving independent third-party verification of high-value or high-risk marine operations. Its primary objective is to ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and best practices to minimise risks. 

Similarly, marine salvage involves the recovery of vessels, cargo, or other property from peril at sea. This may include refloating stranded vessels, removing wrecks, and salvaging valuable cargo. Salvage operations are crucial in preventing environmental disasters, minimising financial losses, and maintaining navigational safety. 

Engineering plays a critical role in both marine salvage and MWS, ensuring that operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards. In marine salvage, engineering considerations include structural integrity assessments of damaged or sunken vessels, buoyancy calculations for refloating, stability analysis, and the use of specialised lifting and towing equipment. Salvage engineers must also account for environmental factors such as wave loads, currents, and seabed conditions when planning wreck removal or cargo recovery.

Similarly, in MWS, engineering assessments focus on verifying the structural suitability of vessels and offshore installations, reviewing load-out and sea-fastening arrangements, and ensuring compliance with operational and safety standards.
