Career Story: Marine Consents and Environment Manager

My role

I work closely with engineers, project managers, and environmental specialists to ensure offshore and coastal projects, comply with environmental legislation and marine policy.

I also help protect sensitive habitats and species by supporting programmes that manage seabed works, vessel operations, and construction.

It’s a role that combines technical expertise with diplomacy and foresight, ensuring marine projects are delivered responsibly in an ever-changing landscape.

My biggest lesson

The most important lesson I’ve learned is the value of collaboration and clear communication. Marine projects are rarely straightforward, and success depends on bringing people together, listening to diverse perspectives, and finding practical, evidence-based solutions.

My proudest moment

Mentoring others and watching them grow in confidence and capability has been my proudest achievement.

Winning an award for mentoring was an honour and reinforced my belief that investing in people builds a more resilient, connected, and forward-thinking marine industry. It reinforced my belief that investing time in others helps build a more resilient, connected, and forward-thinking marine industry.

My career journey

My career has been shaped by a passion for the marine environment and sustainable development. I started in environmental management and marine ecology, gaining a strong foundation in regulatory frameworks and field monitoring.

Over time, I moved into roles focussed on marine consents and environmental compliance, where I could make a bigger impact.

What does success look like?

For me, success means making a positive difference to the marine environment while inspiring others in the field. It’s not just about personal achievements, it’s about leaving a legacy of resilient ecosystems and a stronger, more connected professional community.

My career advice

Be curious, proactive, and open to learning from every experience. Seek out mentors, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to take on challenges as these experiences will help you grow quickly.

Equally important, develop good communication and collaboration skills. Working effectively with diverse stakeholders is key to delivering successful, sustainable outcomes in this field.

Why the IMarEST

Being a member of the IMarEST has allowed me to achieve full professional membership and chartership, which represents my commitment to maintaining the highest standards in my work.

I also appreciate the opportunity to connect with a vibrant community of marine professionals through volunteering, networking, and events. It’s incredibly rewarding to collaborate on initiatives that advance best practice, inspire the next generation, and promote innovation.
