Chartered Marine Scientists are professionals, who harness, exploit, manage, use or apply marine science in the pursuit of knowledge, understanding of the marine environment, wealth creation and/or the provision of services in the marine sector.
An individual wishing to pursue registration as CMarSci (Oceaonography) will be a professional with the academic qualifications and technical expertise to:
- Observe, measure or model the physical, chemical, geological and/or biological components of the ocean
- Produce, interpret and utilise ocean information for the planning and efficient administration of the ocean and its resources
- Conduct research and development activities in oceanography
- Undertake policy or teaching activities in oceanography
- Represent ocean science in wider earth system science
Why should I gain CMarSci (Oceanography) registration?
Globally, there is a growth in oceanographic activities particularly related to operational oceanography.
Alongside an ever-increasing focus on understanding global climate change and the role of the oceans, an acceleration in the use of the oceans and exploitation of ocean resources, there is an increasing need to ensure that there is public confidence in the work of oceanographers and of oceanography as a science.
Individuals who aspire to be recognised as professional oceanographers require independent assessment of their competence and commitment, and this standard provides the means to achieve that.
CMarSci (Oceanography) registration provides employers, regulatory authorities, industry bodies and other stakeholders with assurance of the quality of their workforce.
What do I need to gain the registration?
The registration is open to everyone who can demonstrate the required high-level knowledge, understanding and professional competence.
The exemplifying educational standard is a Master’s level qualification in an approved subject. There are many routes that can be measured to meet this standard, including a combination of academic awards, vocational qualifications and experiential learning through work.
Competence includes the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin performance. CMarSci (Oceanography) registrants are required to maintain their professional competence, working within professional codes of conduct and participate actively within their profession.
How do I apply?
To become a CMarSci (Oceanography) registrant, applicants must have their competence assessed by the IMarEST according to our own standards.
Claims to qualifications, experience and training will require formal documented evidence. In giving details of experience, applicants will need to show how this relates to the required competencies for CMarSci (Oceanography).
What's next?
